CSAFP Cup 2014

The CSAFP Cup is an annual shooting competition that is organized by the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Since last year, ARMSCOR has gladly played host to this highly-anticipated shooting event. 

It is a fund raising activity that aims to provide financial support to the AFP Educational Benefit System Office (AFPEBSO), the office that supports the education of selected children of our fallen soldiers. 

The CSAFP Cup 2014 is a three-in one shooting event that includes the All Military shooting match (5 stages Level I), Games of the Generals (5 stages Fun Shoot) and the IPSC Level III Main Match (14 stages of Pistol and Mini-Rifle).

Civilians shooters may shoot Stages 6-14 on July 3. 

The first event on July 3, 2014 is a one-day IPSC Level I shooting match (Stage 1-5) for all military personnel who are part of their respective BOS (Branch of Service's official teams).  General officers may also participate in the All Military event either as part of their respective Branch of Service teams or as individual shooters. Civilians who want to shoot on this day may do so but they can shoot only Stages 6-14.

To avoid 'clogging' of shooters during the Games of the Generals on July 5, only the Head of Agencies, Chiefs of AFP Branches of Service and Bureau Chiefs are prioritized to shoot Stages 1-5  on this day. All other general officers are required to return on this day (July 5, Saturday) to participate in the Team Shoot-off (Team vs Team) match that will happen at around 3:30pm. 

On  the other hand, civilian shooters are encouraged to shoot the Stages 1-5 on July 4 and July 6 to prevent a long queues in these stages on Saturday (July 5). 

Oh, before I forget, I have to emphasize that the proceeds of this match will go to the trust fund that is used to support the scholarship program for our fallen heroes. 

Who are our fallen heroes anyway? They are the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country. Talk about the infamous Zamboanga siege, Al-Barka encounter, Abu Sayyaf atrocities and communist banditry. Our soldiers are always in the frontlines against any armed threats to defend our people!

Shooting is fun, right? By participating in this event, we can enjoy the game while helping others at the same time. I will be there to shoot too!

IDPA Shooting Techniques: 'Train as you fight!"

When I learned that the Philippine Coast Guard intends to use the IDPA format shooting competition during the Games of the Generals, I was elated. Soldiers like me need shooting skills and techniques that are gained in IDPA competitions. The last time I participated in this kind of competition was in 2011. I reviewed my skills in engaging targets using the 'Tactical Sequence'. I tried it both during day time and night time.

My CZ SPO1 Pistol Fun Shoot

 

I have watched countless films showing a hulky actor shooting his enemies with two pistols, without missing any of them. Hmmmmm. Believe it or not? I wanna experience this 'trick' myself. See the result.

Shooting with either strong hand or weak hand is possible with constant practice. In precision shooting events, I had experienced hitting X's at 25m and 50m in a deliberate fire scenario. What about shooting with both hands all at the same time? Is it possible to align both guns to the target at the same time? I did this practice just for fun. See the outcome.

I love IDPA shooting techniques because they are very much applicable to the scenarios experienced by the soldiers. The so-called 'Tactical Sequence' is done in this manner.

 

Of course, who is not familiar of the 'ratratero' style of target engagement? Some shooters really like the sound of quick 'splits', not mindful of shooting accuracy. With serious shooting drills, accuracy and speed can be attained. Again, this is just for fun. How is the sound?

PPSA Level 1 PNP Invitational Shootfest

I am a shooting competition player. No, I am not saying I am the best man during shooting competitions; but, I am the man who only shoots during competitions.

Due to the demands of my current job,  I rarely have the chance to do shooting practices so I regularly participate in shooting competitions to review my perishable shooting skills.

On the eve of the COMELEC imposed gun ban, I participated the PNP Invitational Shootfest (Level 1, PPSA Sanctioned Match) held in Camp Crame, Quezon City. 

The Course of Fire was quite similar to the one used during the Games of the Generals a week before. As the Team Manager of the Army Team, I had the chance to familiarize the COF but I didn't have the chance to run the course.

Stage 1 was a night fighting scenario. I disliked the way shooters were required to carry the flashlight which was contrary to the tactical considerations that soldiers are trained for.

Using my strong hand, I assaulted the targets, focusing my eyes only at the front sight as I 'neutralized' my enemies one by one. Some of the shooters missed the targets here. Well, I am a Scout Ranger!

Stage 1  Time: 17:44 secs; Hits: A-19, C-3

Stage 2 was a little bit tricky with some 'double vision' targets in the middle. I shot the targets using 'piso-piso' technique. Slow but sure!

Stage 2 Time: 22.84 secs; Hits: A-19, C-6 

Stage 3 involves shooting targets from awkward shooting positions. Trigger-happy shooters love this course of fire. I re-engaged one target, seeing that there was only one bullet hole on it. IPSC shooting requires quick    hand and eye coordination. How I wish I can shoot faster than this one.

Stage 3 Time: 24.94 secs; Hits: A-29, C-7

Stage 4 was a 'long course', requiring 32 rounds. This is the first course that I ran, as part of my warm up. Probably, I lacked stretching exercises because I wasn't comfortable shooting in squatting position, resulting to a missed shot. 

Stage 4 Time: 21.90 secs; Hits: A-20, C-6, D-5, M-1

Stage 5 was a short course but the presence of round plates at approximately 15 meters is a daunting challenge to 'tournament player' like me. To ensure accurate shots, I paused on the metal targets. I proved it better than mowing the targets down with rapid fire, missing some shots.

Stage 5 Time: 16:52 secs; Hits: A-13, C-3

Shooting is fun. I love it. Whether I bring home trophies or not, I will always continue honing my marksmanship skill.

Bonding time through shooting competitions

I shoot IPSC-sanctioned shooting competitions once in a while as part of my sustainment training. Due to my hectic schedule nowadays, competitions are actually my training days (valid shooting alibis). During the anniversary shootfest of the Philippine Air Force, I tagged along my little shooting addict, Harvey, who loves the 'aroma of gunpowder' (as he describes it) like me. Nah, we are not after for trophies here, it is just for fun. Most importantly, it is our bonding time.

Lt Gen Roland Detabali

 'BAD INFLUENCE?' 

Back in 1995, I was complaining when Major Roland Detabali, the Team Manager of the Army Shooting Team, wanted to take me as part of the training pool for the ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet.

As a fresh graduate of the Scout Ranger course, my simple dream is to serve in the frontlines of Basilan. Because of his 'strong' influence, I ended up shooting target papers 8am-4pm everyday starting in September 1995.

 Later, I found myself in different corners of the globe, winning both friends and medals. In the late 90's Major Detabali and I were part of the Army Team which saw action in the ASEAN region. He was among the top pistol shooters. I was a neophyte rifle shooter, serving as the Team Leader of our 10-man Rifle Team.

Now, as a 3 star general, he is my shooting buddy in IPSC matches. Meanwhile, as an Army major, I am still afflicted with the so-called "shooting addiction". I am proud to have brought honor for the country in my international competitions. You know by now who my 'bad influence' is.

I owe him my shooting skills.I am sharing these to my soldiers.
